Mottram was a painter of marine and coastal scenes. Born in Rotherham, Yorkshire he moved to London at an early age, living in Stoke Newington and Hampstead. He began exhibiting Cornish subjects in 1880s and in 1901 he and his wife and young family moved to Cornwall, living in St Ives. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Newlyn Art Gallery and elsewhere.
