Lear stayed in Malta from December 1865 to March 1866. During this time he made a number of drawings and watercolour of Verdala Palace. A former hunting lodge, Verdala Palace was restored by Sir William Reid in the 1850s and was the country residence of the Governors of Malta during British rule. It is now the official summer residence of the President of Malta.
