She was the younger daughter of Charles Stuart, 1st Baron Stuart de Rothesay. During her childhood her father served as British Ambassador in Paris where she received her early education. A friend of many members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle she received some art training from Rossetti and attended classes held by Ruskin. She painted mythological and biblical subjects, copies after old masters, and genre scenes, especially of children. She exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery 1877-82. A celebrated beauty, in 1842 she married Henry Beresford, 3rd Marquis of Waterford. Tragically he was soon afterwards killed in a hunting accident and she then retired to live at Ford Castle, Northumberland. Sadly, they had no children, but children would feature greatly in her art especially in her delightful small watercolours, her illustrations and in her great achievement of the mural decorations in Ford School Hall. Her portrait by Francis Grant is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Watercolours by her can be found in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum Print Room.
