James Webb was a pupil of the marine artist Clarkson Stanfield.  He lived all his life in Chelsea, London and specialised in marine subjects and British and Continental landscapes, often with dramatic sea and sky effects.  He was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and British Institution.  Works by him are in the collections of the Tate Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum and a great many provincial art galleries.
