Gadsby was born in Derby, the son of a solicitor. He studied in London at Heatherley’s School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools where he was influenced by Millais. In 1870 he travelled on the continent, visiting Rome and Venice. He specialised in portraits and genre paintings of children exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists and elsewhere. Works by him are in the collection of Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
