Hugh Wallis was born into a Kettering Quaker family and was educated at Ackworth School, Yorkshire. He studied at the Herkomer Art School at Bushey in Hertfordshire and from 1894 until 1922 he exhibited fourteen works at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Glasgow Institute; Manchester Art Gallery and Royal Society of Portrait Painters. His 1922 oil painting of Flowers in a Window is in the collection of Manchester City Art Gallery. Wallis later worked as an arts and crafts metal worker being particularly well known for his copper trays with distinctive pewter inlays and patterned rims.
