Henry A Bishop was born in London and studied at the Slade, London, Atelier Cormon in Paris and with the American painter Alexander Harrison in Brittany.  He also spent some time studying in Brussels and Pittsburg, USA.  Initially he worked in Cornwall painting mainly figure subjects and portraits and was a founder member of the St Ives Arts Club.   His style evolved after visits to the Middle East and a long stay in southern Europe and Morocco.  His travels resulted in many small paintings on panel recording the light and shadows of the Mediterranean towns and buildings.  Bishop exhibited at the New English Art Club from 1915 and at the Royal Academy from 1922.  He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1932 and a Royal Academician in 1939.   He held a series of one-man exhibitions at the Goupil, Baillie and Leicester Galleries.

He is represented in the Tate Gallery; National Portrait Gallery; Manchester City Art Gallery and other public collections.
