Henry William Banks Davis was born in Finchley, the son of a barrister. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and was known for his landscapes and paintings of cattle and horses. His early work was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites but is style later became broader. Many of his landscapes were painted in Wales or Scotland but he also painted in Northern France, having a house in Boulogne. He exhibited at all the major exhibitions, becoming ARA in 1873 and RA in 1877. He died in Rhayader, Radnorshire. Works by him are in many public collections. Mother and Son, his 1894 painting of a mare and foal, is in the collection of the Tate Gallery.
