Leo Gordon Henry Thomas Hardy was born in Bruges, Belgium, the son of British parents. He spent his boyhood in Sheffield. After World War II he became Head of Southend School of Art where he was considered a progressive and encouraging leader. During his career he exhibited at the New English Art Club and Royal Academy, London. His 1952 painting of a football match at Priory Park is in the collection of the Beecroft Art Gallery, Southend Museum.
