Richard Hubbard Arroll was born in Glasgow and studied at Glasgow School of Art. Whilst at the school he studied painting and metal work, a brass candlestick by him being held in the in collection of Glasgow School of Art. He exhibited landscapes oil paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy, Glasgow Institute and the Paris Salon. In 1916 he enlisted with the Seaforth Highlanders and was sent to France, sadly dying of his wounds after the Battle of Arras in 1917.
