Cypress Trees
Cypress Trees
Charles Adrian Scott Stokes was born in Southport, Lancashire. After a time as a cotton broker he entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1872. Together with his wife, Marianne, he travelled widely in Europe. He wrote on the practice of landscape painting, became a full Royal Academician in 1919, won medals at several world fairs, was first President of the Sir Ives Society of Arts and was Vice President of the Royal Watercolour Society. The present work may be a view on the Amalfi coast. A favourite painting haunt for the artist and his wife.
