Frederick Smallfield was born in London, the son of a printer. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools in the late 1840s, at the same time as several members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Although it is not known how he was connected to them his work clearly shows their influence and his early watercolours were praised by John Ruskin in his 1858 Academy Notes. In 1860 he was elected an Associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society.
The present work was painted the year before his best-known Pre-Raphaelite work Early Lovers, now in the collection of Manchester City Art Gallery.
