Born in Cookham, Gilbert Spencer was the younger brother of the painter Sir Stanley Spencer. He studied at Camberwell School of Art, the Royal College of Art and at the Slade. After serving during the Great War he held his first one-man show at the Goupil Gallery in 1923 and became a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club and elsewhere. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held in Reading in 1964. The Tate Gallery and many other public collections hold examples of his work. This work is accompanied by various letters and documents relating to its original purchase from the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition of 1956.
