Henry Larpent Roberts was born in Nottingham, the son of Thomas Roberts, a wealthy lace manufacturer. It is not known where he studied but it is very likely that he would have attended Nottingham School of Art & Design. His father died in 1863 and in that same year he exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy and appears to have moved to London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists producing still life, landscape and figure paintings which showed a strong Pre-Raphaelite influence. In his later years his fortunes declined and although he appears not to have exhibited, he continued to work as an artist. He died in Walthamstow workhouse in 1917.
