Hodkinson was born in Chester and studied at the Royal College of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (1946-1967) and also with the London Group and at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, of which society he became a full member. He lived in Wimbledon and latterly in Barnes. His 1952 still life Blue and White Asters is in the collection of Bradford Museums and Galleries.
