Reynolds was born in Newmarket, Suffolk and studied at Woolwich Polytechnic School of Art before winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, 1952-3. He held his first one-man show at the Redfern Gallery in 1952 and at Durlacher Gallery in 1954. He taught at the Central School of Art and Design, 1954-61 and later at St Martin’s School of Art. His early work was influenced by the pastoral Neo-Romantic tradition with highly individual landscapes and his much praised botanical studies show the influence of his interest in Chinese painting. From about 1958 he moved into abstraction, creating paintings, reliefs and constructions, often in white. The Tate Gallery and many public collections hold examples of his work.
