The present work shows the artist’s son, William Newenham Montague Orpen, RA (1878-1931) standing before his easel in his Dublin studio. It was exectured by his father during a time when the younger Orpen was teaching at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. An accomplished amateur artist, Arthur Herbert Orpen was a solicitor and talented amateur artist. W N M Orpen’s circa 1912 portrait of his parents is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
