Mounting the Hotchkiss - Norfolk Volunteers

Sold

Gillett worked in pen and ink, oil, watercolour and pastel and his subjects where often taken from sporting and rural life. This energetic pastel of Norfolk Volunteer soldiers with their Hotchkiss machine gun is unusual in Gillett’s oeuvre. It was executed sometime around Gillett’s return to Norfolk in 1916 and shows the local volunteers preparing for active service in the Great War.
