John da Costa was born in Teignmouth, Devon and brought up in the Channel Islands. He went to school in Millbrook, Hampshire before going on to study art in Paris and London. After a time in Newlyn he established himself in London as a society portraitist, making several trips to New York to paint his affluent American sitters.
