Jules Lessore was born in Paris and initially studied under his father, the painter, printmaker and ceramic artist, Emile Lessore (1805-1876). He travelled throughout Europe, painting landscapes, marines and portraits, although he principally known for his work in England, where he settled in 1871. In Britain he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1879 until his death in 1892. He also exhibited at the Society of British Artist, New Watercolour Society and Grosvenor Gallery. His son Frederick Lessore was a sculptor who founded and ran the Beaux Arts Gallery in London and his artist daughter Therese was a founder member of the London Group and third wife of Walter Sickert.
