Stuart Scott Somerville was born in Yorkshire, the son of the Scottish born artist Charles Somerville. He was educated at home and studied under his father. In He initially exhibited at the Doncaster Art Society before showing his first painting at the Royal Academy in 1926 when aged only 18. He thereafter had along career exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and at the Fine Art Society. In 1934 he participated in a year-long exhibition to East Africa with the British Museum. In the mid 1940s he moved to Suffolk where he lived and worked until the later years of his life.
