She was born in London as Alice Margaret Watts and married the art director Roger Kemble Furse in 1936. With the encouragement of her husband she became a costume designer for films, beginning work in the late 1940s. She was awarded an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Anne of the Thousand Days (1969) and had five other nominations. She won an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design for Love Among the Ruins in 1975, staring Katharine Hepburn. This costume design for Love Among the Ruins is for Miss Hepburn’s character, Jessica Medlicott. It was directed by George Cukor, with Hepburn played the role opposite Laurence Olivier. It seems that Furse and Hepburn had an excellent working relationship, exchanging many letters and going on shopping trips together. Altogether she designed three productions for Hepburn: The Lion in Winter (1968) for which Hepburn won an Oscar, A Delicate Balance (1973) and Love Among the Ruins (1975). Furse’s untimely death from breast cancer in 1974 meant some of her work for the film had to be completed by Germinal Rangel.
