Spender was born in London, the son of the poet and writer Sir Stephen Spender. He studied Modern History at Oxford and art at the Salde School of Fine Art. Although started his career as a painter he soon dedicated himself to sculpture. He first makes a drawing from his idea and then carves directly into the stone. He lives and works in Italy.
