Alfred Adalbert "Bertie" Boese was the son of a German oil merchant who became a naturalised British subject in the 1870s. He worked as an artist and illustrator in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this time he contributed to The Windsor Magazine and The Boy’s Own Paper.
