Sebastien Le Clerc was born in Metz, the son of a goldsmith. He became engineer-geographer to Marshall de la Ferte, executing plans of several fortresses in the Metz area. He moved to Paris in the mid 1660s and, on the advice of Charles Le Brun, he gave up his engineering work to concentrate on his drawing and engraving. He joined the Academie Royale de Peinture et Sculpture in 1672 where he taught perspective and geometry. He worked for Louis XIV, being made “Graveur de Roi”. He also worked at times at the Gobelins factory and as a technical draftsman and military engineer. The present work is one of a set of four prints illustrating the story of Cupid and Psyche, commissioned by Claude Pottier, circa 1700.
