White was born in Scotland. When he was still young his family emigrated to Australia, later returned to study at the Royal Scottish Academy. He moved to Branscombe, Devon in about 1890 and thereafter devoted himself to watercolour and oil paintings of the county’s villages and often dramatic coastal landscape. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Society of Painters in Oils, Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters, and Royal Society of British Artists.
