Maggie Hamilton was born in Glasgow and brought up in Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire. Her elder brother was the Glasgow School artist James Whitelaw Hamilton. She married the painter Alexander Nisbet Paterson, the brother of James Peterson, in 1897 and their daughter was the artist Viola Paterson. She was a still life painter and embroiderer and was an artist member of the Lady Artists Club, and Vice President in 1928 and 1937. She showed widely at the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and well as a the Royal Academy and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
