Janes was born in Egham Surrey and studied at the Slade, the Central School of Arts and Crafts and at the Royal College of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, New English Art Club and elsewhere. Works by him are in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, Manchester Art Gallery and elsewhere. In addition to his oil paintings and watercolours he was a noted etcher and wood engraver.
