Connard was born in Southport, Lancashire. At first he worked as a house painter and studied art at evening classes until he won a scholarship in textile design to the Royal College of Art. In 1898 he was awarded a British Institution prize which took him to Paris. Returning to London he worked as an illustrator and taught art at Lambeth School of Art. He became known as a painter of romantic decorative landscapes and interiors with figures. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, Leicester Galleries, Royal Watercolour Society, New English Art Club and elsewhere. During World War I he served in the Royal Field Artillery, rising to Captain, before being invalided out with severe shell shock. He was later appointed an Official War Artist. He painted murals for Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, Windsor and also for the liner RMS Queen Mary. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1925 and was Keeper 1945-9. Works by him are in many public collections including the Tate Gallery and Imperial War Museum, London.
