Houses by the River Severn at Eardington, Shropshire
Kennington was born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire and studied at the Liverpool School of Art, the Royal College of Art and at the Academie Julian in Paris. Settling in Chelsea he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1880-1916 and was also a regular exhibitor at the Royal Society of British Artists and Grosvenor Gallery. He was a founder member of the New English Art Club and the Imperial Arts League. He is known for his paintings of domestic and everyday life and for his social realist works depicting the plight of Britain’s poor. His son was the painting and sculptor Eric Kennington (1888-1960).
