Frost was born in Wandsworth. After meeting William Etty in 1825 he entered Henry Sass’s School for Drawing and Paintings before going on to the Royal Academy Schools in 1829, winning the Gold Medal in 1839. He established a reputation as painter of portraits, historical and mythological subjects often inspired by Spencer and Milton. Queen Victoria purchased his Una Among the Fairies and Wood Nymphs in 1847 and works by him are held in many public collections including those of the Tate Gallery, British Museum, Victoria & Albert, Ashmolean Museum and Fitzwilliam Museum.
