William Hatherell studied at the Royal Academy Schools. From the early 1880s he was contributing illustrations to The Graphic and Harper’s New Monthly Magazine. In the late 1880s he travelled to Australia on a commission from Cassell’s to create illustrations for their 1890 book Picturesque Australia. The P&O steamers left Southampton and travelled via the Suez Canal, stopping at Colombo, Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) on route to Australia. An account of the journey with many illustrations appeared in The Graphic in February 1889. The present work shows a view on deck with elegant ladies resting in the shade during their stop at Colombo.

He became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1888 and the Royal Institute of Oil painters in 1898. He was also a member of the Langham Sketch Club, Royal West of England Academy and the American Society of Illustrators.
