Born in Manchester, the son of a lithographic printer. He studied at Manchester School of Art and the Royal College of Art. After a short time in Paris he returned to live in London where he worked as a painter of figure and landscape subjects in oils and watercolour. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and exhibited regularly with that society and at other venues including the Grosvenor Gallery, Goupil Gallery, Royal Academy and New English Art Club. Works by him are in the collections of Manchester City Art Gallery, Leeds University and the Atkinson Art Gallery, Southport.
