Born in Edinburgh where he studied at the Edinburgh Institution before moving to London to continue his studies at the Heatherley School of Fine Art. Initially he worked as an illustrator for The Illustrated London News, 1903-1907, as well as illustrating several books including Le Morte d’Arthur (1910/11) and The Canterbury Tales (1912). During visits to Spain he was impressed by Spanish dancers and painted them, often in semi-dressed poses, throughout his career. He was enormously successful and published many of his watercolours in limited edition print form. Flint was elected present of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1936 to 1956 and was knighted in 1947.
