John Hawkesworth was born in London, educated at Rugby, the Sorbonne and Queen’s College, Oxford. During World War II he served in the 4th battalion, Grenadier Guards, reaching the rank of captain. After the war he began his film career as an assistant to the art director Vincent Korda, working on films such as The Third Man, Outcast of the Islands and The Sound Barrier. In the mid 50s he worked as an independent designer before joining Rank as a producer. In the mid 1960s he began to work for television as a script-writer and producer for Upstairs, Downstairs, The Duchess of Duke Street, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and many other productions. The present work is a set design for the 1956 Second World War film, The Man Who Never Was, directed by Ronald Neame.
