Nicholson was born in Blyth, Northumberland and was self taught whilst working as a mariner. Usually working in watercolour, he exhibited at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle; Royal Academy; Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Society of Marine Artists. He was a member of the Newcastle Society of Artists and lived at North Shields, Northumberland.
