The Hon Maude Alethea Stanley was the third daughter and fourth of the ten children of Edward John Stanley, 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley and his wife Henrietta Maria (nee Dillon-Lee). Rosalind, her youngest sister, was the formidable wife of George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle whose Cumbrian home was Naworth Castle. Maude never married and devoted her time to charitable work concerning the poor children and women of London.
