JS25
JOSEPH SOUTHALL, RWS, NEAC, RBSA
(1861-1944)
Study for “Bessie at her Work Table”, 1908
Signed with monogram and dated l.l.: JES / 7.ii.1908
Pen and black ink with pencil
20 by 13 cm., 8 by 5 in.
Provenance:
Abbott & Holder Ltd
A red chalk drawing of the same composition showing the artist’s wife Bessie at work was previously with Liss Llewellyn Fine Art from the artist’s estate (now Private Collection). Their cataloguing for the work stated: “Bessie was a gilder and the creator of Joseph Southall’s frames. This possibly shows her at work on a frame, incising ornament into the gesso before gilding.”
