In the Bower
Annie French was born in Glasgow where she studied at the School of Art, 1896-1902. From 1906 to 1914 she shared a studio with Bessie Innes Young and Jane Younger at 227 West George Street. From 1909 to 1912 she taught on the design side of the Ceramics Department at Glasgow School of Art and in 1914 she married George Woolliscroft Rhead and they moved to London. Known for her intricate and delicate illustrations of fairy tales, poems, postcards and greeting cards, she exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Works by her in held by many public collections including the Tate Gallery and Victoria & Albert Museum. She died in Jersey in 1965.
