Robert Hills was born in Islington and studied under John Alexander Gresse before entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1788. In 1804 he was one of the six founder members of the Old Watercolour Society, being its first secretary and later treasurer. He was to exhibit almost 600 drawings there during his lifetime. He is known for his watercolours of parkland, rural scenes and animals. Works by him are in the collection of the British Museum, Royal Academy and Tate Gallery, London and in many regional galleries.
