Lucien Hector Monod was born in Paris, the son of Swiss Calvinist parents. He studied at the Academie Julian under Puvis de Chavannes and from 1891 was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon and Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In 1903/4 he held a one-man exhibition his drawings at Dowdeswell & Dowdeswell in London. In 1896 he married a Scottish American Charlotte (Sharlie) Todd McGregor from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1917 they moved to Cannes, building a house: Clos Saint-Jacques. Their son, Jacques-Lucien Monod, was a Novel Prize-winning biochemist. Works by him are in many public collections including those of the British Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum, National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Canada and elsewhere. His cousin was the British Impressionist artist William de Glehn. Monod and de Glehn shared a flat while the two were students in Paris. They shared an exhibition at the Goupil Gallery in 1899 where Lucien’s work was praised for its delicacy. Wilfred and Jane de Glehn were regular visitors to Cannes. The present was sent to exhibition at Chapman Brothers gallery in Chelsea, the artist’s address being care of William de Glehn.
