Rex Hopes was born in Bristol. He initially worked as a window dresser for Austin Reed in Oxford Street whilst studying in the evenings at the Slade School of Art. He and his wife returned to Bristol and established a private school for girls. As a member of the Fabian Society and a very good poet, he contributed to various poetry journals which he illustrated with fine black and white drawings. He was elected a member of the Bristol Savages in 1933 and became its President on three occasions in 1946, 1957 and again in 1967. As a designer he produced fabrics, pottery and work for the theatre and as an artist he mainly specialized in still life studies.
