Early in 1858, Whistler went to London from Paris to recuperate from a bad fall. He stayed in Chelsea with his sister Deborah and her husband, the gifted etcher, Seymour Haden. It was Haden who encouraged Whistler in his first efforts at etching. This moody image of the artist’s nephew, dates from this period. With its dramatic lighting it echoes Rembrandt whose work was collected by Haden. In 1858 Whistler included the print in his first published set, “Douze eau-fortes d’apres Nature” known as the French Set.
