Piper’s lithograph of Canon’s Ashby was created in 1983 and was printed in an edition of 150. The present work is one of 10 artist’s proof editions.
John Piper was born in Epsom, Surrey. After spending 5 years in the family law firm he decided to pursue a career in art and entered Richmond School of Art followed by the Royal College of Art. He worked as a painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows and both opera and theatre sets. His work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches, monuments and country houses. An official war artist during World War II, he often depicted bomb-damaged churches and landmarks and is especially known for his records of Coventry Cathedral following the air raid of 1940.
Piper experimented with print making from as early as 1923 when he produced four wood engravings. His prints embody his love of Britain through their depiction of its art, architecture and topography. However, frequently underpinning his designs are the elements of collage, construction and assemblage that featured in his modernist work of the early 1930s.
Canons Ashby is an Elizabethan manor house about 11 miles south of Daventry. It was the home of the Dryden family but has been owned by the National Trust since 1981.
