John Frederick Herring Jnr was born in Doncaster, the son of the great equestrian and sporting artist John Frederick Herring, Snr. He studied under his father and from about 1835 Herring Snr would add Sr behind his signature to distinguish his own work from that of his talented son. His brothers Charles and Benjamin were also artists.
