Born in Darlington, Yorkshire, Gibbs studied at Liverpool North-West School of Art and Liverpool University before a time studying in London. He initially worked at a landscape painter and art master in Manchester and Derbyshire. In 1910 he moved to London and took Whistler’s old studio in Chelsea and began to concentrate on his work as a portrait painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and Paris Salon. At the outbreak of World War II he moved to Stunts Green, Sussex.
