Girl in a Fur Coat
Lancelot Roberts was born in 1883, the son of Robert L Roberts, of Trafford Old Hall, Old Trafford, Manchester and northern director of Thomas Cook, travel agents. Lancelot (known as “Lanty” to his family and friends) was passionate about art from and early age and according to family tradition he took some lessons from his life long friend and fellow Manchester artist, L. S. Lowry. He lived in Manchester for most of his life, retiring to Egwlyns Bach, North Wales a few years before his death. For a time he was Art Master at Henshaws College, Manchester He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Walker Art Gallery, Royal Society of Birmingham Artists, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Cambrian Academy and elsewhere and was a member of the Pastel Society and the Royal Cambrian Academy (associate member in 1916 and full member in 1921). Paintings by him are in the collection of Dudley Art Gallery and Manchester City Art Gallery.
