This bottle’s corked!” Friend of family and something of a wag comes to the rescue: “Don’t agree at all, I call it un-corked. Eh?” Relief of everybody and collapse of grumbler. Lewis Christopher Edward Baumer was born in St John’s Wood, London and studied at the St John’s Wood Art School, the Royal Academy of Arts and at the Royal College of Art. Although he exhibition widely he is best known as a black and white illustrator of children’s books and society cartoonist and caricaturist. His first drawings appeared in the Pall Mall magazine in 1893 and in Punch in 1897. He was a member of the Pastel Society (1908) and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (1921). He also belonged to the Langham Sketching Club, the Arts Club and Chelsea Arts Club.
