A country gentleman from Chigwell in Essex, Howitt only became a professional artist due to financial troubles. He first exhibited in 1783 and his subjects were usually drawn from country and sporting life. He was influenced by his brother-in-law, Thomas Rowlandson. His animal sketches were often done from life at such places as the Menagerie at the Tower of London. Works by him are in many public collections including the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum.
