Stevens designed the lion to ornament the lower railings of the British Museum, erect circa 1852. In 1895 the railing was dismantled and the lions dispersed. Some were installed around the Duke of Wellington’s monument in St Paul’s Cathedral. In 1896 Bracciani & Co made bronze casts of Stevens’ lions.
